ThunderBrowse

ThunderBrowse is an extension for the Mozilla Thunderbird desktop email client. It implements a web browser, empowering users to surf the web or follow links within Thunderbird without the need to open up another application. ThunderBrowse has received several awards (including a prestigious 5 star reward from C|NET) for its usefulness, simplicity and robustness. Over two million installs have been reported since the extension was first released in 2006. ThunderBrowse was one of the few Thunderbird extensions to gain a Mozilla Recommended status on their official addons repository.

  • Date: May 2006 – Dec 2012
  • Platform: Multiplatform. Built on Mozilla Thunderbird.
  • High Concept: Create an extension for the Mozilla Thunderbird email client that will allow users to browse the internet within their email without having to open another application.
  • Role: Lead Engineer, PR, Support
  • Tasks: Everything
  • More Info: Originally started as a small fix for Thunderbird, but eventually kept getting updated as I wanted to expand the project. The goal was to make a browser that was lightweight, safe and had the basic features that a normal browser would.
This is such a good extension that it should be bundled as standard in the next release of Thunderbird. You'll save both RAM and productivity reading links within it rather than outside of it.
ThunderBrowse is a Mozilla Thunderbird plug-in that gives you a feature you didn't know you were missing. Once you get it, though, it's all over--e-mailing without it is so much slower.
